MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT

POLICE OPERATIONS

As in most Police Departments the Patrol Division of the Manchester Police Department is the backbone of the Department.

Patrol accounts for 70% of the sworn personnel employed by the Department.

Due in large part to the efforts of the members of the Patrol division the Manchester Township Police Department has earned a reputation for strict enforcement of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Laws, making the roadways safer for all of us.

 TACTICAL TEAM

The Manchester Police Department organized and trained a tactical unit in 1986. The Tactical Team is a voluntary assignment which requires much time and effort from its members, to ensure the highest quality team that works together.

High standards are maintained for the selection of Team Members . Once appointed to the Team, candidates must pass a Basic Tactical Training School before becoming a full member of the Team. Members are required to participate in monthly training exercises and are further encouraged to train whenever possible. In 1998 our Team entered into an agreement with the Lakehurst Police Department, to create a Joint Tactical Team which is recognized by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office as the Manchester/Lakehurst Municipal Tactical Team.

The Team now operates in both jurisdictions and can provide support to Regional Tactical Teams in Ocean County if needed. Since its inception, we have worked and/or trained with various Federal, State, County and Municipal agencies, including the FBI, Secret Service, DEA, ATF, DOD Police, NJ State Police, GPU Nuclear Security, Ocean County Narcotics Strike Force, Ocean County Regional Response Teams (North, South, and Central), and most Municipal Police Departments in Ocean County.

The Team has handled over one hundred (100) operations, primarily as an entry team, but also maintain specialized training in other areas. As most Team members are SCUBA certified, we are frequently called upon for other assignments. As a SCUBA Team we have recovered over thirty (30) stolen vehicles from the waters within our jurisdiction, and have assisted in the recovery of several drowning victims. Other members of the Team are certified  as EMT's and Police Instructors with Specialized Training in numerous fields.

To further support the Ocean County Regional Tactical Team, one officer is assigned to the Ocean County Sniper Pool and two officers are assigned to the Hostage Negotiation Pool.
